**NICOSIA** – The Republic of Cyprus is in a period of official mourning following the passing of former President George Vassiliou, who died on Tuesday night at the age of 94. Vassiliou, a pivotal figure in the island nation’s post-independence history, had been receiving critical care at Nicosia General Hospital since January 6th due to a severe chest infection. His family announced his peaceful demise, stating it came after a two-year battle with illness.
Born in Famagusta on May 20, 1931, Vassiliou’s distinguished career spanned academia, international business, and ultimately, the highest office in Cypriot politics. After pursuing higher education in Geneva, Vienna, and Budapest, and specialising in marketing in London, he worked for the prominent Reed Paper Group in the United Kingdom. His return to Cyprus marked the beginning of a profound commitment to public service.
Vassiliou entered the political arena in 1988, running as an independent candidate for the presidency with the crucial backing of AKEL. His tenure as president, from 1988 to 1993, was characterised by a fervent drive towards economic development, social advancement, and the modernisation of the Cypriot state. A cornerstone of his presidency was the strategic decision to submit Cyprus's application for membership in the European Union, a move that would irrevocably shape the nation's future trajectory. Later, he was instrumental in the formation of the Movement of Free Democrats in the early 1990s, further cementing his influence on the political landscape.
The impact of Vassiliou's leadership extended beyond immediate policy. He is widely credited with the establishment of the University of Cyprus, a testament to his vision for enhancing the country's intellectual capital. His dedication to resolving the protracted Cyprus problem and achieving national reunification remained a steadfast commitment throughout his life. His influence also extended to the international stage, where he was recognised as a "universal citizen" who adeptly broadened the country's global standing.
Current President Nikos Christodoulides expressed his profound sorrow, noting that Vassiliou's name was inextricably linked with the nation's economic progress, social evolution, and state modernisation. "It is with sadness that I learned of the death of former President of the Republic George Vassiliou, whose name was synonymous with the effort for economic development of our country, social progress of our people, and modernisation of the Cypriot state in all areas," Christodoulides stated.
Vassiliou's wife, Androulla Vassiliou, herself a former European Commissioner, shared a poignant tribute: "After two years of suffering, my beloved George, my life partner for 59 years, passed away peacefully in our arms tonight. It is difficult to say goodbye to this man who was an exceptional husband and father, a man full of kindness and love for his place and people." He is also survived by his children, Sofia, Evelthon, and Vasso, and his grandchildren.
In recognition of his significant contributions, a state funeral will be held on Saturday at 1pm at the Ayia Sofia cathedral in Strovolos, with full presidential honours. His body will lie in state at the cathedral from 10am to 5pm on Friday, allowing the public to pay their respects. A book of condolences will be opened at the Presidential Palace and at Cypriot diplomatic missions abroad. In lieu of floral tributes, the family has requested donations be made to the Arodafnousa palliative care centre, the Pancyprian Kidney Patients Organisation, and Spavo (the association for the prevention of family violence). Saturday has been declared an official public holiday, and flags on public buildings and schools will be flown at half-mast until the funeral. Vassiliou's passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of transformative leadership and unwavering dedication to Cyprus.
