**NICOSIA –** As the Republic of Cyprus prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, President Nikos Christodoulides has extended a significant invitation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signalling a deliberate strategy to decouple the island's EU role from its protracted bilateral dispute with Ankara. This overture, aimed at fostering a more constructive atmosphere during Cyprus's six-month tenure at the helm of EU foreign policy discussions, has been met with predictably cautious, yet firm, responses from the Turkish side.
The invitation, formally relayed by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, proposes President Erdogan's attendance at an informal council meeting scheduled for April. This move is widely interpreted as a strategic manoeuvre by Nicosia to underscore its commitment to not leveraging its upcoming influential position to unilaterally advance its national grievances concerning Turkey.
