Cyprus Decked in Festive Cheer: A Kaleidoscope of Yuletide Celebrations

Cyprus is embracing the Yuletide spirit with a diverse array of Christmas events and celebrations unfolding across the island, promising to enchant residents and visitors alike. From the historic streets of Paphos to the underwater depths off Larnaca, and the vibrant heart of Nicosia, a rich tapestry of cultural experiences is being woven, aiming to "bring the magic of Christmas to town" and foster a sense of community and joy.

In Paphos, the Municipality has orchestrated a comprehensive programme designed to infuse the city with festive cheer. Throughout December, various neighbourhoods will host a medley of activities, including musical performances, captivating dance displays, and atmospheric film screenings. A particularly enchanting outdoor viewing of the beloved film "Love Actually" is scheduled for Saturday, December 20th, at Atticus Summer Garden, setting a warm and inviting tone. The following day, Sunday, December 21st, Mouttalos Square will transform into a hub of merriment from 11 am to 1:30 pm, featuring theatrical presentations, engaging children's activities, and a touch of technological wonder with robotic model building workshops. Adding to the visual spectacle, a parade of vintage cars, bedecked in Christmas finery, will cruise through Paphos' main thoroughfares on Monday, December 22nd, at 5:30 pm, preceding a free Christmas concert at the Markideio municipal theatre at 7 pm, showcasing the talents of conservatory students and the Pasydy choir. The festivities in Paphos are set to extend into the new year, ensuring a prolonged period of celebration.

Meanwhile, the historic quarter of Old Nicosia is inviting the public to immerse themselves in a more intimate and artisanal Christmas experience. On Saturday, December 20th, and Sunday, December 21st, 2025, Ermou Street will become a vibrant showcase of local creativity. Residents and local businesses are opening their doors, transforming their homes and spaces into temporary workshops and cafés. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover unique, handmade Christmas gifts, savour delectable local food and drinks, and enjoy live music, fostering a direct connection with artisans and the community. This initiative not only aims to welcome visitors but also to provide crucial support for local craftspeople.

Venturing to the coast, Larnaca is offering a truly unique yuletide spectacle with its annual underwater Christmas event at the Zenobia shipwreck. Divers will adorn the iconic wreck with ornaments, a symbolic gesture that aims "to highlight Larnaca’s unique relationship with the sea, diving tourism and environmental awareness, combining festive atmosphere with respect for nature." This initiative underscores the island's commitment to marine tourism while promoting a profound respect for the natural environment, culminating in the enjoyment of Christmas sweets post-dive.

Adding a touch of classical grandeur to the festive calendar, Nicosia will host the captivating multimedia performance "The Nutcracker and I" on December 28th, 2025, at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. Presented as part of the Nicosia International Festival, this innovative production reimagines Tchaikovsky's classic ballet through a contemporary lens. Solo piano performances by Alexandra Dariescu, graceful dance by Désirée Ballantyne, and the evocative hand-drawn digital animations by Yeast Culture, projected onto a transparent screen, promise to create an immersive and inspiring experience. Organizers intend for this performance to build bridges between classical music and younger audiences, offering a message of hope and perseverance. Reduced ticket prices are available for eligible groups, further enhancing accessibility to this remarkable artistic endeavour.
