**KATO PYRGOS, CYPRUS** – The remote Tillyria region is witnessing a groundbreaking metamorphosis as Kato Pyrgos emerges as the vanguard of Cyprus's pioneering climate-neutral community vision. This ambitious undertaking, poised to redefine sustainability in the island nation, is rapidly progressing through a comprehensive green transformation encompassing nine major projects, signalling a significant stride towards a more environmentally conscious future for its participating villages.
The initiative, driven by the collective aspiration of revitalising a historically underserved area, has already seen tangible developments. A key component of this transformation is the establishment of the Tillyria Energy Community, a non-profit entity that has successfully galvanised five villages – Kato Pyrgos, Pano Pyrgos, Pachyammos, Mosfiliou, and Pigenia – under a unified environmental banner. The enthusiastic response from residents underscores the project's resonance, with over 200 individuals expressing interest in joining the energy community. Furthermore, more than 100 applications have been submitted for photovoltaic installations and associated storage systems, demonstrating a robust commitment to renewable energy adoption.
The initial phase of these vital energy projects is being propelled by a substantial €1.8 million grant from OPAP, providing the crucial financial impetus for infrastructure development. The Cyprus Energy Agency is diligently conducting a techno-economic analysis to meticulously define the scope and specifications of the first phase of this essential infrastructure. Concurrently, a dedicated green kiosk, designed for the collection of recyclable materials, has undergone inspection and is now operational, having been connected to the local network. The operational expenses for this facility are secured until September 2029, thanks to the support of the LIFE IP CYzero WASTE project, ensuring its sustained functionality in the interim.
Beyond energy and waste management, the project is also addressing critical infrastructure needs, particularly in wastewater treatment. A temporary wastewater treatment station is being implemented to cater to the immediate requirements of local hotel units, the community council, and the police station. This facility, with an estimated cost of €300,000, will be managed by the Nicosia Waste Management Board, which will oversee its procurement, installation, and ongoing operation. The projected operational and maintenance costs for wastewater treatment are remarkably low, estimated at under €1 per cubic meter. Hoteliers, the police, and the community council have all formally committed to contributing their respective shares towards these expenses, solidifying a collaborative approach to service provision.
The long-term vision for wastewater management in the Tillyria region is equally ambitious. Plans are well underway for the development of a permanent wastewater collection network and a comprehensive treatment station that will serve all communities within the Tillyria Energy Community. Budgetary provisions for this significant undertaking have been incorporated for the year 2026, signalling a firm commitment to a sustainable, long-term solution. This dual approach, addressing both immediate needs with a temporary facility and planning for a permanent infrastructure, highlights the strategic foresight of the project.
The collaborative spirit driving this initiative was underscored by the recent visit of Deputy Minister to the President Irini Piki, alongside the Ministers of Transport and Agriculture, to review the progress. Their presence signifies the national importance attached to this pilot scheme, intended to serve as a blueprint for similar climate-neutral community projects across Cyprus.
