Million-Euro Arson Attack Fuels Fears of Escalating Limassol Gang War

A targeted arson attack in an upscale Limassol district has incinerated four luxury vehicles valued at over €1.5 million, intensifying concerns of a burgeoning gangland feud linked to the recent assassination of a local businessman. The brazen late-night strike in Mouttagiaka, which saw a Lamborghini among the vehicles completely destroyed, occurred against a backdrop of a high-profile murder investigation that has already seen six individuals detained. The incident unfolded shortly before midnight on Wednesday, when a hooded figure, captured on CCTV, breached a fenced parking area. The perpetrator, dressed entirely in black, used a flammable liquid, believed to be petrol, to torch the cars. A private security guard witnessed the act and attempted to give chase, but the suspect fled before the blaze fully erupted. The fire service was alerted at 11:46 p.m. Hours later, at 3:25 a.m., a separate car fire damaged a vehicle owned by a 20-year-old in another part of Limassol, though a connection to the primary attack has not been established. Authorities are scrutinizing potential links to the October 17th murder of 49-year-old businessman Stavros Demosthenous. One of the owners of the torched vehicles is identified as a foreign businessman and a close associate of the murdered man. This connection has fueled speculation that the arson was a deliberate warning, a violent message in an ongoing conflict. Despite the compelling narrative, police officials maintain a cautiously objective stance. Assistant Chief and head of Limassol CID, Lefteris Kyriacou, stated that while "all possibilities are being looked at," there is currently "no testimony linking the two cases." He added that "regarding associations and some other business activities, this is all under investigation," confirming that evidence had been gathered and insurance details would be examined. The context of the Demosthenous murder investigation looms large. With six suspects in custody—including individuals extradited from Greece and a convict allegedly orchestrating the hit from prison—the case has revealed a sophisticated criminal operation. The murder itself was executed from a van, with the assailants using a torched vehicle and a getaway motorcycle to escape. Four suspects have been charged and are set to face trial on January 29. As the CID’s investigation intensifies, the million-euro inferno has cast a pall over the city, signalling that the repercussions of the recent violence may be far from over. The pursuit of the hooded arsonist now represents a critical front in preventing a further descent into lawlessness.
