The impetus for this intensified focus on civil defence stems directly from the escalating tensions in the region, notably following recent military actions involving major global powers. Cyprus Civil Defence spokesperson, Panayiotis Liasidis, elaborated on the process, stating that inspectors had previously assessed all shelters in June, meticulously documenting their condition. He further indicated that recent directives have been issued to re-examine these facilities with the explicit objective of implementing necessary improvements. The development of a mass public notification system, designed to disseminate timely and accurate information during crises, is a priority, with completion anticipated by early June. These tests, currently being conducted and scheduled for repetition imminently, are a collaborative effort involving the Deputy Ministry of Innovation and mobile network operators. The immediate practical challenge of accommodating evacuees from Akrotiri has also underscored the need for swift action. As of Friday, March 6th, schools in the Akrotiri municipal district remained closed, and an evacuation order was still in effect, with a review slated for the same date. In response, approximately 250 individuals have been relocated to various facilities, with the Cyprus Red Cross providing essential accommodation and meals. Individuals can access shelter information via the SafeCY application or by contacting the Civil Defence operations control centre directly. The recommended emergency kit comprises a comprehensive list of provisions, including water, non-perishable food items, personal hygiene supplies, a dust mask, a first aid kit, illumination devices, batteries, a portable charger, a battery-powered radio, a multi-tool, a whistle, necessary medications, vital documents, cash, a change of clothing, and provisions for infants if applicable.
