Cyprus has been plunged into mourning following two tragic road collisions that claimed the lives of two individuals within a stark 24-hour period, underscoring persistent concerns regarding road safety on the island. The grim toll began on Saturday evening with a fatal incident in Nicosia, followed by another devastating accident on Sunday afternoon in the Limassol district, prompting renewed calls for stringent enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
The first fatality occurred on Stavraetou Street in Strovolos, Nicosia, where a 17-year-old motorcyclist tragically lost his life after being struck by a car. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the car, a 54-year-old man, was found to be three times over the legal alcohol limit. His breathalyzer reading registered 63 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, significantly exceeding the permissible limit of 22 microgrammes. The driver has since been arrested and remanded in police custody as the investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
Barely 24 hours later, the island was once again confronted with the devastating reality of road accidents. On Sunday, around 1:35 PM, a collision on the Limassol to Platres road, near the junction leading to Vati, resulted in the death of a 66-year-old car driver, identified as Kyriacos Kyriacou. The accident involved Kyriacou's vehicle and a motorcycle. The injured motorcyclist, whose age is cited as 40, sustained severe injuries and was promptly transported to a private clinic in Limassol where he remains in a serious condition. Emergency services, including the Fire Service, were required to extricate Kyriacou from the wreckage of his car. It has been reported that the motorcyclist involved in this incident was operating without a valid licence and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The circumstances surrounding the Limassol collision are currently under thorough examination by the police. Initial reports suggest that the deceased driver may have been executing a right-hand turn, thereby obstructing the path of the oncoming motorcyclist. The incident unfolded on a three-lane stretch of road, and authorities are scrutinising the traffic flow and potential contributing factors.
