HAVANA/WASHINGTON – A tense confrontation in Cuban territorial waters has resulted in the deaths of four Cuban nationals residing in the United States, with six others sustaining injuries. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday near an island off Cuba's northern coast, involved a US-registered speedboat and a Cuban border guard vessel. The Cuban government has asserted that the occupants of the speedboat were engaged in a plot for "terrorist purposes," while US officials have pledged an independent investigation to ascertain the full truth.
According to statements released by Cuba's Ministry of the Interior, the US-flagged vessel, identified by its registration number FL7726SH, encroached upon Cuban waters. A Cuban coast guard patrol boat reportedly approached to conduct an identification check. It was at this juncture, Havana claims, that individuals aboard the speedboat initiated gunfire, wounding the Cuban patrol commander. Cuban border guards subsequently returned fire, leading to the fatalities and injuries among the speedboat's passengers. Authorities reported the recovery of handguns, assault rifles, improvised explosive devices, and tactical equipment from the vessel. An eleventh individual, reportedly part of the alleged infiltration, was apprehended and is said to have confessed to the plot. The six surviving passengers have been detained.
The Cuban authorities have characterized the group as anti-government Cubans, some of whom were allegedly previously sought for plotting attacks. The identities of the deceased individuals have been confirmed as Cuban nationals who were living in the United States. Among the detained survivors are Amijail Sanchez Gonzalez, Leordan Enrique Cruz Gomez, Conrado Galindo Sariol, Jose Manuel Rodriguez Castello, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara, and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra. The incident has inevitably amplified existing strains in bilateral relations, prompting significant concern and demanding a thorough and transparent examination from both sides.
