EAC Impersonation Scammers Target Limassol Residents with Fake Power Outage Ruse

The modus operandi involves perpetrators fabricating power outages and then demanding payment for a non-existent repair service.

The scheme, as detailed by the police, begins with the fraudsters visiting residential properties, typically houses and multi-apartment buildings. Upon arrival, they confidently identify themselves as representatives of the EAC, claiming they are on-site to address a reported electricity disruption. In a calculated move to lend credibility to their deception, these individuals are reportedly manipulating the external distribution boards, deliberately disengaging the power supply switch to simulate a fault. Following this manufactured crisis, they then re-engage the switch, creating the illusion of having resolved the problem. It is at this juncture that they present residents with a fabricated bill for their supposed intervention.

The primary objective of these charlatans is evidently financial gain, preying on the public's reliance on consistent electricity supply and their trust in official utility providers. The timing of these incidents, occurring in quick succession and prompting a public advisory, underscores the urgency with which law enforcement is treating the matter.
