Cyprus Grapples with Global Instability: Eurobarometer Reveals Deepening Anxieties

**NICOSIA** – A recent Eurobarometer survey has cast a stark spotlight on the mounting anxieties of Cypriots concerning the trajectory of their nation and the wider world, with heightened geopolitical tensions and pervasive global instability emerging as significant drivers of public disquiet. The findings, published on Wednesday, paint a picture of a populace deeply concerned about security, the integrity of digital communication, and the economic landscape, while simultaneously articulating a fervent desire for a more cohesive and assertive European Union.

The survey data reveals that a substantial proportion of Cypriots are apprehensive about a range of external threats. Notably, concerns surrounding armed conflicts rank exceptionally high, with 80% of respondents expressing worry, a figure considerably exceeding the EU average of 72%. Similarly, the specter of terrorism looms large, affecting 77% of Cypriots, compared to 67% across the Union. The escalating impact of climate change, manifesting in an increased frequency of natural disasters, is also a potent source of unease, with 80% of Cypriots flagging it as a concern, significantly higher than the EU’s 66%. Cyberattacks, a growing menace in our interconnected age, are a worry for 70% of Cypriots, outpacing the EU average of 66%. However, the issue of unchecked migration registers as the most pronounced concern, with an overwhelming 86% of Cypriots voicing their apprehension, a stark contrast to the 65% recorded for the EU as a whole.

Beyond immediate security threats, the survey delves into the increasingly complex realm of digital communication, uncovering significant apprehension regarding misinformation, hate speech, and the proliferation of sophisticated fabricated content such as deepfakes. A staggering 82% of Cypriots expressed concern about misinformation, while 84% cited deepfakes as a worry, both figures substantially higher than their respective EU averages. Inadequate data protection also emerged as a significant concern for 82% of respondents. This pervasive sense of digital vulnerability appears to be fuelling a broader pessimism about the future. Cypriots exhibit a greater degree of pessimism regarding the world's future (58%) and the EU's future (48%) than their European counterparts.

Despite this widespread apprehension about broader geopolitical and societal trends, there remains a commendable level of personal optimism. A substantial 75% of Cypriots remain sanguine about their own futures and those of their families, a sentiment closely aligned with the EU average of 76%. This dichotomy suggests that while external factors are instilling a sense of unease, personal resilience and a focus on immediate well-being continue to underpin individual outlooks.

Crucially, the survey underscores a powerful collective demand for a more robust and unified European response to the multifaceted challenges confronting the continent. An overwhelming 95% of Cypriots believe that EU member states should exhibit greater solidarity when confronting international crises, a sentiment echoed by 89% of EU citizens. Furthermore, a significant 94% of Cypriots advocate for a stronger, more influential voice for the EU on the global stage, a sentiment shared by 86% of the wider EU population. The call for increased EU resources to tackle these challenges is also pronounced, with 86% of Cypriots in favour, compared to 73% across the Union. Notably, there is a particularly strong endorsement for an enhanced role for the European Parliament, with 90% of Cypriots favouring this, a figure dramatically higher than the 59% average observed within the EU. Economically, while the cost of living remains a concern for 34% of Cypriots, the creation of new jobs and the broader economy are a priority for 43%, suggesting a focus on economic growth as a means to bolster stability.

In essence, the Eurobarometer findings illuminate a Cypriot public acutely aware of the volatile global environment and deeply invested in the European project’s capacity to navigate these turbulent waters. The survey serves as a clear mandate for enhanced European cooperation, a stronger collective voice, and a more decisive approach to the array of security, digital, and economic challenges that continue to shape the future.
