**LARNACA, CYPRUS** – A disconcerting security lapse has emerged at a National Guard firing range near Kalo Chorio, where approximately 13.6 kilograms of TNT explosive material has gone missing. The discovery, made on Thursday, has triggered a swift and comprehensive investigation involving the Cyprus Defence Ministry, the National Guard, and security services, casting a shadow over the island's military preparedness and raising significant concerns about the whereabouts of the powerful ordnance.
The incident unfolded during a planned engineer training exercise. Two devices, each containing roughly 6.8 kilograms of TNT and intended for missile destruction, were placed at the range for a controlled detonation scheduled for around 2:00 PM. However, following established safety protocols, personnel waited the requisite hour before approaching the deployment site at approximately 3:00 PM. It was at this juncture that the startling absence of the explosive charges was noted. "It appears that after a controlled explosion did not occur and after all safety protocols were followed, the trainees approached the area where the explosives were placed and did not find the two devices there," stated Christos Pieris, the Defence Ministry spokesman. "That’s when the concern arose."
In response to the alarming development, the firing range was immediately cordoned off, and joint investigative efforts commenced. The gravity of the situation was underscored by the subsequent postponement of a subsequent training exercise that had been slated for the following day. The National Guard Chief, Emmanuel Theodorou, personally visited the range on Friday to oversee the unfolding inquiry, signalling the high-level attention this security breach has garnered.
Initial investigative steps involved the deployment of a drone for preliminary reconnaissance, which yielded no positive results. This was followed by a physical inspection of the area that also failed to locate the missing TNT. Investigators are reportedly exploring two primary hypotheses: either a deliberate act of theft or an unexpected, undetected detonation of the explosives during the exercise itself. Statements are currently being taken from relevant personnel at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters as the meticulous process of piecing together the events unfolds.
The disappearance of military-grade explosives, even in relatively small quantities, presents a considerable security risk.
