Former President George Vassiliou Passes Away, Cyprus Enters Period of Mourning

The Republic of Cyprus is currently observing a period of official mourning following the recent passing of former President George Vassiliou. He died on Tuesday evening at the venerable age of 94. Vassiliou, who had been a truly pivotal figure throughout the island nation's history since gaining independence, had been receiving critical medical care. He had been admitted to Nicosia General Hospital on January 6th due to a severe chest infection. His family subsequently announced his peaceful demise, confirming it followed a prolonged two-year struggle with illness.

Born in Famagusta on May 20, 1931, Vassiliou’s accomplished career encompassed academia, international business, and ultimately, the highest political office in Cyprus. After undertaking advanced studies in Geneva, Vienna, and Budapest, and specialising in marketing in London, he gained valuable experience. He worked for the distinguished Reed Paper Group in the United Kingdom before returning to Cyprus. His homecoming heralded the commencement of a profound dedication to public service.

Vassiliou entered the political sphere in 1988, standing as an independent candidate for the presidency. His campaign was significantly bolstered by the crucial endorsement of AKEL. His presidential term, which extended from 1988 to 1993, was notably characterised by a fervent commitment to economic development. He also championed social advancement and the vital modernisation of the Cypriot state. A significant achievement during his presidency was the strategic decision to submit Cyprus's application for membership in the European Union. This pivotal move would irrevocably influence the nation's future direction. Later, he played an instrumental role in establishing the Movement of Free Democrats in the early 1990s, further solidifying his political influence.

The impact of Vassiliou's leadership extended far beyond immediate policy implementation. He is widely recognised for spearheading the establishment of the University of Cyprus, a clear testament to his foresight in enhancing the country's intellectual capabilities. His unwavering dedication to resolving the protracted Cyprus problem and achieving national reunification remained a steadfast objective throughout his life. His influence was also evident on the international stage, where he was esteemed as a "universal citizen" who skillfully elevated the country's global standing.

Current President Nikos Christodoulides conveyed his deep sorrow, highlighting that Vassiliou's name is intrinsically linked with the nation's economic progress. He also noted the former president's contributions to social evolution and state modernisation. "It is with sadness that I learned of the death of former President of the Republic George Vassiliou, whose name was synonymous with the effort for economic development of our country, social progress of our people, and modernisation of the Cypriot state in all areas," Christodoulides stated.

Vassiliou's wife, Androulla Vassiliou, herself a former European Commissioner, offered a touching tribute. "After two years of suffering, my beloved George, my life partner for 59 years, passed away peacefully in our arms tonight. It is difficult to say goodbye to this man who was an exceptional husband and father, a man full of kindness and love for his place and people." He is also survived by his children, Sofia, Evelthon, and Vasso, along with his grandchildren.

In acknowledgement of his substantial contributions, a state funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm. It will take place at the Ayia Sofia cathedral in Strovolos, with full presidential honours being accorded. His body will lie in state at the cathedral from 10 am to 5 pm on Friday, providing an opportunity for the public to pay their respects. A book of condolences will be available at the Presidential Palace and at Cypriot diplomatic missions abroad. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to specific charitable organisations. Saturday has been designated an official public holiday, and flags will be flown at half-mast. Vassiliou's passing signifies the conclusion of an era, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
