A significant road accident involving the Cyprus Men's National Handball Team bus occurred early Saturday morning on the Tallinn–Tartu highway. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road and overturned near Neanurme, necessitating immediate emergency responses. While most of the delegation avoided serious injury, two individuals required hospitalisation, and eight others underwent precautionary medical examinations.
The team had been travelling from Tallinn to Põlva for a critical European Championship qualifying match against Estonia. This fixture was the return leg after Estonia had secured a 31-27 victory earlier in the week in Nicosia. Inclement weather conditions, characterised by reduced visibility and compromised road traction, are understood to have been the primary contributing factor to the mishap.
Emergency services, including the Southern Rescue Center and the Tartu ambulance service, responded with commendable speed to the accident scene. Their prompt intervention was crucial in managing the immediate aftermath and providing essential care. All 23 individuals on board were attended to, with the two hospitalised subsequently transferred to Tartu University Hospital for further observation. The remaining eight, despite not sustaining severe injuries, were transported for comprehensive medical checks as a prudent measure.
A replacement bus was swiftly arranged to transport the uninjured team members to their intended destination in Põlva. The Cypriot embassy in Finland, which provides consular services to Estonia, has been actively involved in offering support and assistance. A spokesperson confirmed their commitment to providing any necessary help, highlighting the mobilisation of diplomatic channels.
The Cyprus Handball Federation (KOF) acknowledged the seriousness of the incident in a public statement. They confirmed that no life-threatening injuries were sustained, but emphasised the necessity of hospitalising two members of the delegation. The federation expressed relief that the situation had not resulted in more dire consequences, considering the violent nature of the bus overturning.
This unfortunate event has inevitably cast a shadow over the team's participation in the qualifying round. Discussions are reportedly underway between the involved federations and the European Handball Federation (EHF) regarding the feasibility and rescheduling of the match. The paramount concern for the KOF and Cypriot authorities remains the safe repatriation of the entire delegation.
