Cyprus Illuminates Yuletide with Diverse Festive Celebrations

Cyprus is wholeheartedly embracing the Yuletide spirit, presenting a comprehensive spectrum of Christmas events and celebrations island-wide. These occasions are meticulously designed to captivate both residents and international visitors throughout the festive season. From the historically rich streets of Paphos to the intriguing underwater environments near Larnaca and the lively core of Nicosia, an intricate mosaic of cultural experiences is being artfully constructed. The overarching objective is to infuse communities with the profound magic of Christmas and cultivate a palpable sense of shared joy.

Paphos Municipality has meticulously orchestrated an extensive programme intended to imbue the city with vibrant festive cheer. Throughout December, various districts will host a delightful assortment of activities, encompassing musical performances, captivating dance presentations, and atmospheric film screenings. An especially enchanting outdoor viewing of the universally cherished film "Love Actually" has been scheduled for Saturday, December 20th, at Atticus Summer Garden, which promises a wonderfully inviting ambiance. The subsequent day, Sunday, December 21st, Mouttalos Square will transform into a lively centre of merriment from 11 am to 1:30 pm, featuring theatrical displays, engaging children's activities, and innovative robotic model building workshops. Furthermore, a visually striking parade of vintage automobiles, elaborately adorned with Christmas decorations, will traverse Paphos' primary thoroughfares on Monday, December 22nd, at 5:30 pm. This will be followed by a complimentary Christmas concert at the Markideio municipal theatre at 7 pm, highlighting the considerable talents of conservatory students and the esteemed Pasydy choir. The extensive festivities in Paphos are anticipated to extend well into the new year, ensuring a prolonged period of joyous celebration.

Meanwhile, the historic district of Old Nicosia invites the public to immerse themselves in a more intimate and artisanal Christmas experience. On Saturday, December 20th, and Sunday, December 21st, 2025, Ermou Street will be transformed into a dynamic showcase of local creativity. Residents and local enterprises are opening their premises, converting them into temporary workshops and charming cafés. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to discover exquisite, handmade Christmas gifts, savour delicious local culinary specialties, and enjoy live musical performances, fostering a direct and meaningful connection with local artisans and the wider community. This thoughtful initiative not only aims to welcome visitors but also significantly supports local craftspeople.

Venturing towards the coast, Larnaca is offering a truly distinctive yuletide spectacle with its annual underwater Christmas event at the renowned Zenobia shipwreck. Skilled divers will meticulously adorn the iconic wreck with festive ornaments, a symbolic gesture intended to highlight Larnaca’s profound connection with the sea, its thriving diving tourism, and its commitment to environmental awareness. This initiative successfully combines a festive atmosphere with a deep respect for the marine environment, culminating in the enjoyment of traditional Christmas sweets post-dive.

Adding a touch of classical grandeur to the festive calendar, Nicosia will host the captivating multimedia performance "The Nutcracker and I" on December 28th, 2025, at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. Presented as a distinguished part of the Nicosia International Festival, this innovative production offers a contemporary reimagining of Tchaikovsky's beloved classic ballet. Solo piano performances by Alexandra Dariescu, graceful dance by Désirée Ballantyne, and the evocative hand-drawn digital animations by Yeast Culture, projected onto a transparent screen, are poised to create an immersive and deeply inspiring experience. Organizers aspire for this performance to forge connections between classical music and younger audiences, conveying a powerful message of hope and perseverance. Reduced ticket prices are thoughtfully available for eligible groups, further enhancing accessibility to this remarkable artistic endeavour.
