Cyprus Village Leads Charge Towards Climate-Neutral Future

The remote Tillyria region in Cyprus is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with Kato Pyrgos spearheading the nation’s pioneering vision for climate-neutral communities. This ambitious initiative, set to redefine sustainability across the island, is rapidly advancing through nine major green projects. These developments represent a significant stride towards a more environmentally conscious future for the participating villages.

This project is driven by a collective aspiration to revitalise a historically underserved area, and tangible progress has already been observed. A crucial element is the establishment of the Tillyria Energy Community, a non-profit organisation uniting five villages under a unified environmental banner. Over 200 residents have expressed keen interest in joining this energy community, with more than 100 applications submitted for photovoltaic installations and associated storage systems. This demonstrates a strong commitment to adopting renewable energy sources.

The initial phase of these vital energy projects has received a substantial €1.8 million grant from OPAP, providing essential funding for infrastructure development. The Cyprus Energy Agency is currently conducting a thorough techno-economic analysis to precisely define the scope of the first phase. Meanwhile, a dedicated green kiosk for collecting recyclable materials has been inspected and is now operational, connected to the local network. Its operating expenses are secured until September 2029 through support from the LIFE IP CYzero WASTE project.

Beyond energy and waste management, the project is also addressing critical wastewater treatment needs. A temporary wastewater treatment station is being implemented to serve local hotels, the community council, and the police station. This facility, estimated to cost €300,000, will be managed by the Nicosia Waste Management Board. The projected operational and maintenance costs for wastewater treatment are remarkably low, estimated at under €1 per cubic meter. Hoteliers, the police, and the community council have formally committed to contributing their respective shares towards these expenses.

Long-term plans for wastewater management in the Tillyria region are equally ambitious. Development is underway for a permanent wastewater collection network and a comprehensive treatment station designed to serve all communities within the Tillyria Energy Community. Budgetary provisions for this significant undertaking have been incorporated for the year 2026, underscoring a firm commitment to a sustainable, long-term solution. This dual approach demonstrates strategic foresight in addressing both immediate and future needs.

The collaborative spirit driving this initiative was recently highlighted by a visit from the Deputy Minister to the President, Irini Piki, accompanied by the Ministers of Transport and Agriculture, to review the ongoing progress. Their presence signifies the national importance attributed to this pilot scheme, which is intended to serve as a model for similar climate-neutral community projects throughout Cyprus. The successful implementation in Kato Pyrgos is more than an environmental goal; it is a strategic manoeuvre to enhance the sustainability and infrastructure of the Tillyria region, fostering economic revitalisation and improved living standards for its residents. As the green transformation accelerates, Kato Pyrgos is poised to become a shining example of what can be achieved through innovation, community engagement, and a steadfast dedication to a sustainable future.
