Nicosia Gears Up for Dazzling "Nutcracker and I" Multimedia Spectacle

Nicosia is eagerly anticipating a revolutionary artistic event, blending classical music, captivating dance, and advanced digital technology. World-renowned pianist Alexandra Dariescu will present her celebrated multimedia production, "The Nutcracker and I," at the Nicosia International Festival. This innovative performance, scheduled for December 28, 2025, at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, promises a fresh interpretation of Tchaikovsky's beloved holiday masterpiece. It will explore themes of ambition and perseverance for a contemporary audience.

Alexandra Dariescu, a distinguished Romanian-born pianist and professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, has earned global recognition for her storytelling prowess. Her rendition of "The Nutcracker and I" moves beyond a typical ballet, offering a personal perspective where Clara is portrayed as an aspiring concert pianist. This autobiographical element, a key feature of Dariescu's artistic vision, infuses the familiar narrative with renewed relevance, addressing the aspirations and obstacles faced by young musicians.

The production ingeniously combines Dariescu's solo piano performance, ballerina Désirée Ballantyne's portrayal of Clara, and the enchanting hand-drawn digital animations by Yeast Culture. These visuals, projected onto a translucent screen, interact dynamically with both the pianist and dancer, creating an immersive and visually stunning experience. The musical score features carefully arranged excerpts from Tchaikovsky's iconic ballet, meticulously chosen to enhance the developing story. This captivating 60-minute production has already delighted over 75,000 people worldwide.

The inclusion of "The Nutcracker and I" at the Nicosia International Festival highlights the festival's dedication to innovative productions and broadening engagement with classical music, particularly among younger audiences. Dariescu's work actively challenges traditional perceptions within the music industry and advocates for greater inclusivity. By framing Clara's journey through the lens of musical ambition, the performance aims to inspire hope and resilience in children, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with determination.

Since its 2017 debut at London’s Barbican Centre, "The Nutcracker and I" has toured extensively across Europe, China, Australia, and the United States. Dariescu, who has been based in London since taking up her professorial position in September 2024, continues to champion this production. It serves as a vital connection between classical music's established repertoire and the evolving tastes of today's audiences. The Nicosia Municipal Theatre will host two performances on December 28th at 10:30 and 16:30. Tickets are available online via more.com and at the theatre's box office, with concessions offered to various groups.
