Cypriot authorities are currently reviewing a controversial extradition request from Russia concerning an Israeli national, Alexei Kratzgor, who has been detained on the Mediterranean island. Moscow alleges Kratzgor orchestrated a significant sea piracy incident back in 2009. However, his legal team vehemently disputes these claims, characterising the request as "highly belated" and politically motivated.
The case originates from the daring hijacking of the freighter 'Arctic Sea' in the Atlantic Ocean during August 2009. This vessel, carrying a load of timber, was intercepted by armed individuals posing as law enforcement officers. The ship's 15-member Russian crew were reportedly subjected to violence and held captive before the hijackers took complete control of the vessel. Over three weeks after its disappearance, the Russian Navy successfully intercepted the 'Arctic Sea' near Cape Verde. This led to the subsequent arrest and conviction of eight individuals from Estonia and Latvia in Russia for piracy and kidnapping.
Alexei Kratzgor, an Israeli citizen, was apprehended in Cyprus after arriving on a cruise liner. Russian authorities subsequently issued an international arrest warrant, asserting that Kratzgor was the mastermind behind the entire operation. He is accused of being responsible for its organisation, personnel recruitment, and logistical coordination. It is also alleged that he absconded from Latvia while on bail. If extradited to Russia, Kratzgor could face severe charges, including armed piracy, kidnapping, and extortion.
Nir Yaslovitzh, Kratzgor's attorney, has presented a robust defence, urging Cypriot officials to reject the extradition request. Yaslovitzh's primary argument centres on the considerable passage of time since the alleged incident occurred. He stated that the extensive delay by Russian authorities should significantly influence the decision in favour of his client's release under Cypriot law.
