Cyprus is anticipated to reach the lowest point of its winter temperatures tonight, as meteorological predictions indicate a substantial drop across the entire island. The Department of Meteorology has issued advisories concerning wintry conditions, including the strong possibility of snow and frost at higher elevations due to a minor low-pressure system moving through the area. However, this period of intense cold is expected to be brief, with a notable warming trend forecast to begin from the middle of the week.
The current atmospheric disturbance is responsible for bringing the most severe cold spell of the winter season so far to the region. Meteorological experts predict that inland areas will experience temperatures as low as approximately 7°C. For individuals travelling to the mountain ranges, particularly the Troodos peaks, the temperature is expected to fall to around 2°C. Even the typically warmer coastal regions will not escape the chill, with forecasters expecting temperatures near 10°C. The highest parts of the Troodos mountains are especially vulnerable to wintry precipitation, with forecasts suggesting potential snow or sleet, alongside localized frost.
A significant alteration in wind patterns will accompany the sharp decline in temperature. Winds are predicted to shift from the northwest towards the northeast. Along the coast, these winds are expected to be moderately to strongly intense, registering between force 4 and 5 on the Beaufort scale, contributing to slightly rough to rough sea conditions. Inland, winds are forecast to be somewhat less forceful, ranging from force 3 to 4. Tonight's skies are expected to be partly cloudy, with isolated rain showers possible elsewhere on the island.
This period of extreme cold is, however, merely a precursor to a considerably more pleasant weather scenario. Starting from Wednesday, a change in atmospheric pressure is expected to bring about a marked improvement in conditions. The arrival of a high-pressure system will lead to predominantly clear skies and a rapid increase in temperatures. Inland, temperatures are projected to rise to approximately 18°C, while coastal areas are likely to see readings around 19°C. Even the higher mountain regions will experience a significant thaw, reaching temperatures up to 6°C. The northeasterly winds are forecast to continue, maintaining moderate to strong intensity at force 4-5, and the seas will remain slightly rough to rough on Wednesday.
Looking further ahead, Thursday is expected to maintain largely clear and mild conditions, with temperatures holding steady and slightly surpassing the seasonal average. Nevertheless, a return to more unsettled weather is on the horizon, with partly cloudy skies predicted to reappear by Friday and Saturday, indicating potential for further variations in temperature and precipitation as the week progresses. The striking contrast between the imminent frigid night and the subsequent warm spell underscores the dynamic nature of Cyprus's winter climate. Residents are advised to implement necessary precautions against the current cold, while simultaneously anticipating a return to significantly milder conditions in the coming days.
