A substantial infrastructure initiative designed to alleviate persistent traffic congestion and enhance safety within the Ayios Athanasios Industrial Area is now advancing. The initial phase of a crucial northern bypass route is scheduled for tendering. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades affirmed the government's unwavering commitment to addressing the logistical challenges that have long affected this vital economic zone. Local industrialists have also expressed their support for these planned improvements.
The forthcoming tender will specifically target the Evagoras Lanitis section of the proposed northern bypass. This significant project is anticipated to be put out for bid by the end of 2026. This development represents a key component of a comprehensive strategy to improve connectivity and optimize the flow of goods and personnel within the busy industrial estate. Additional sections of the bypass are expected to be tendered in the subsequent months, indicating a coordinated effort to modernise the area's transport network.
The necessity for this upgrade arises from the escalating traffic issues that have become a daily impediment for the approximately 140 businesses operating in the Ayios Athanasios area since 1978. These enterprises, which form a cornerstone of Limassol’s industrial output, have experienced considerable delays and operational inefficiencies due to the current infrastructure's limitations. The Public Works Department has acknowledged that prevailing conditions are suboptimal and has outlined tender specifications aimed at preventing further congestion.
In addition to the bypass, the development of a second emergency entrance and exit for the industrial area is also being actively pursued. Vassos Dimitriadis, President of the Limassol Industrialists’ Association, emphasised the critical importance of this safety measure. He stated that with the intervention of the president and the minister, they are closer to implementing the second emergency access point, which is recognised as a crucial safety issue. This dual access point is considered vital for ensuring rapid emergency response times, potentially protecting lives and property.
The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry has played a pivotal role in driving these developments forward. Previous assurances regarding ongoing efforts to tackle the industrial area's multifaceted challenges were provided in late October. Funding for these essential infrastructure projects is expected to be allocated through either the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry or the Finance Ministry, highlighting the government's recognition of the industrial area's strategic significance.
The Municipality of Kouri, which has jurisdiction over a portion of the affected zone, is actively participating in this collaborative undertaking. The Ayios Athanasios Industrialists’ Association, along with the broader Limassol Industrialists’ Association, has been a strong proponent of these much-needed enhancements. The successful completion of these infrastructure upgrades is anticipated to not only alleviate existing traffic bottlenecks but also stimulate further growth and attract additional investment, solidifying Ayios Athanasios's status as a key industrial hub in Cyprus. The ultimate goal is to cultivate a more efficient, secure, and supportive environment for businesses to flourish.
