The current health situation in Cyprus has changed considerably in recent weeks. Data from ongoing surveillance indicates that influenza has now become the most prevalent circulating respiratory virus. Recent testing has revealed that approximately one in five individuals exhibiting symptoms has tested positive for the flu. This rapid escalation mirrors similar patterns seen in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, where comparable infection rates have been recorded. The growing number of patients visiting primary care clinics and hospitals is being closely monitored.
Associate Professor Constantinos Tsioutis, a distinguished infectious disease specialist and Scientific Coordinator for the European Committee on Infections, offered a serious assessment of the circumstances. He confirmed that Cyprus has not yet reached the peak of the anticipated "great surge." This pattern is concerningly similar to the significant spike observed in the post-holiday period last year.
