Major Road Upgrades Underway Across Nicosia

A large and well-organized program of road works is currently changing the main roads of Nicosia. Cypriot authorities have started a major project to improve the city's infrastructure. The ambitious plan includes resurfacing roads, doing maintenance, and installing new road reflectors. The Nicosia municipality and the Republic’s Public Works Department are managing the project. Important routes like Kennedy, Kyrenia, and Limassol Avenues are affected. To reduce problems for residents and commuters, much of the work is happening at night, with clear traffic diversions in place.

The project has significant financial support. The 2025 works for Nicosia are part of a €200 million infrastructure package funded by the European Investment Bank. This is in addition to a national road works programme, which received over €790 million from the Transport Ministry in 2024. The schedule is very detailed. Recent closures happened on specific dates in mid-to-late November. Important night repairs on the Nicosia-Limassol highway near Kotsiatis and Dali are planned from November 25 to December 4, from 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM.

Although the construction is disruptive, officials describe it as a necessary investment. A spokesperson for the Public Works Department gave important background. He said, “This is partly preparation for Cyprus’ presidency of the EU Council, but many of these works were already planned to improve the city.” This means the EU presidency is speeding up a modernisation plan that already existed; it is not the only reason for the work. The Nicosia municipality has asked for the public's cooperation, stressing that the long-term benefits for the city will make the current inconvenience worthwhile.

This push for improvement is happening across the entire capital. In the northern part of the city, the "Bayındırlık ve Ulaştırma Bakanlığı Karayolları Dairesi Müdürlüğü" is also carrying out its own projects, like a road closure in Haspolat. This shows that, despite the city's administrative division, there is a shared goal to upgrade infrastructure on both sides.

Authorities are urging drivers to follow the detour signs, with more works confirmed for December. Nicosia is entering a long period of change. These upgrades are a strategic effort to improve both the appearance and functionality of the city, preparing it for its upcoming European role and the future needs of its people.
