University of Cyprus Secures Record Funding Amidst Global Expansion

The University of Cyprus has achieved a remarkable milestone, securing over €37 million in external research funding for 2025. This substantial financial success reinforces the institution’s growing international reputation as a leading research powerhouse. Since its establishment in 1993, the university has accumulated more than €457 million in external funding, supporting an impressive 2,565 diverse research projects. Concurrently, the university is strategically expanding its global reach by launching its first academic programme taught entirely in English this coming September. This initiative is anticipated to significantly enhance its international presence and attract a broader spectrum of students.

These considerable financial achievements clearly demonstrate the University of Cyprus's dedication to cultivating a highly research-intensive academic environment. Rector Tasos Christofides emphasized this focus, stating, "The university is research-oriented." This sentiment is further substantiated by the significant number of prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants awarded to its faculty members. Currently, 32 active ERC programmes are being conducted at the university, underscoring the exceptional quality of research being undertaken. Assistant Professor Eleni Vryonidou from the Physics Department recently received an ERC Starting Grant for her project EFT4NP. This ambitious project will utilise data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN to investigate phenomena extending beyond the known Standard Model of particle physics.

Further showcasing its commitment to pioneering research, Professor Ioannis Krikidis has been awarded an ERC Proof-of-Concept grant for his QUARTO project. This initiative intends to apply advanced quantum computing models to the development of next-generation 6G communication networks. In a similar vein, Professor Marios Polycarpou has also secured a Proof-of-Concept grant for WaterSAFE, a project focused on strengthening the cyber-physical security of vital drinking water infrastructure. These prestigious awards not only validate the expertise of the university's researchers but also highlight their significant contributions to critical scientific and technological advancements.

Beyond these individual grants, the university's influence is evident in large-scale projects such as the biobank.cy Centre of Excellence. This centre has already enrolled 10,000 volunteers, actively working towards advancing precision medicine and conducting comprehensive genetic mapping of the Cypriot population. The economic impact of the university's research activities is also substantial. It is estimated that the institution contributes approximately €574 million to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For every €1 million invested in its research initiatives, the total economic output escalates by €7.06 million, with a direct GDP growth of €3.42 million, demonstrating a powerful multiplier effect on the national economy.

The introduction of the English-language programme, titled "Urban Sustainability," developed in collaboration with the Young Universities for the Future of Europe network, represents a pivotal moment for the university. This development follows the recent enactment of enabling legislation, which paves the way for additional English-language offerings planned for September 2027. This strategic shift aims to increase the university's appeal to international students and cultivate an environment where Cypriot graduates develop critical thinking and advanced skills. Council vice-president Androulla Vassiliou stated, "Our graduates have learned to think and to contribute to their country." This initiative is also considered a crucial step in mitigating brain drain and reinforcing the nation's intellectual capital.
