Severe Storm Byron Approaches Cyprus

The island of Cyprus is preparing for several days of very bad weather as a strong storm, named Byron, moves towards the region. Weather experts have told everyone on the island to get ready for heavy rain, powerful winds, and thunderstorms starting from Friday evening. The storm is expected to become stronger over the weekend, and there may even be snow on the highest mountains.

According to the Cyprus Meteorological Department, this storm is currently affecting Greece and will reach Cyprus by Friday night. A spokesperson, Andreas Hrisanthu, explained that the storm will gradually begin to affect the island. At first, there will be some light rain, but by Saturday afternoon, the weather will become much more serious with widespread rain and possible thunderstorms.

The main dangers will come from a combination of different conditions. Winds from the north-east and south-east will become very strong, especially near the coast. These winds will create dangerous conditions at sea, making it risky for boats and ships. At the same time, temperatures will drop significantly, bringing them down to or below normal for this time of year. This cold air will turn the rain into snow over the Troodos mountains on Saturday evening, which could make mountain roads difficult or dangerous to use.

Officials are watching the situation closely and will likely issue formal weather warnings soon. Hrisanthu said that a yellow or orange warning could be announced shortly. These warnings tell the public that the risks are increasing and that they should take action to stay safe. The heavy rain could cause flooding in some areas and make it hard to see while driving. The mix of wind, rain, and snow is expected to cause travel problems across Cyprus.

This severe weather is not expected to end quickly. Stormy conditions will probably continue through Monday and the unstable weather may last for much of the next week. This means the risks from the storm will continue for a long period. Authorities advise people to secure any loose objects outside their homes, avoid unnecessary travel—especially in the mountains—and follow the latest updates from the Meteorological Department. As Storm Byron arrives, the key message is for everyone to be prepared for a long and severe weather event.
