Violence Returns on Ceasefire Anniversary

On the exact anniversary of a difficult ceasefire, the sound of Israeli fighter jets was heard again over southern Lebanon. A number of airstrikes, including a major one last Friday, have hit people and vehicles. Israel says these targets are connected to Hezbollah. This increase in fighting is a dark way to mark the anniversary. It also shows how weak the truce really is. This agreement has been broken thousands of times, trapping civilians in constant violence.

The Israeli military says these actions are necessary to fight terrorism. They claim the goal is to stop Hezbollah from recovering after what Israel calls major losses in the last war. Officials say they are only aiming at "Hezbollah terrorists." They used this term for a person killed in a strike in Froun village. However, the human cost tells a different story. Lebanon's health ministry reports that over 330 people have died in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire began. This number includes many civilians.

For people living in villages like Jarmak and Froun, the political reasons for the conflict do not matter. Their reality is one of broken safety and deep fear. After seeing the terrible results of a strike, a Froun resident named Mohamad Mokdad made a desperate wish for a normal life. "Who is going to help us?" he asked. "There were body parts here and in the trees... I just want to live in peace." His words show a growing feeling of hopelessness in areas that usually support Hezbollah.

The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, gives clear numbers on the failed truce. They report that Israel has committed over 10,000 violations from the air and ground since the ceasefire. This ongoing hostility has stopped the full implementation of a peace plan. This plan, created by the US and France, required Hezbollah to move its forces away and the Lebanese army to take control. One year later, Israeli forces still hold at least five important hilltops in the south.

Recent strikes, including one in Beirut that killed a senior Hezbollah member, show how easily the situation could become worse. With the main terms of the ceasefire ignored and violence happening almost every day, the region is very dangerous. The anniversary is not a celebration of peace. Instead, it is a sad reminder of a conflict that is stuck, with civilians suffering the most.
