A significant enhancement to cross-border movement within the Cypriot capital was officially inaugurated on Friday, with the operational commencement of a third traffic lane at the Agios Dometios crossing. This development, which has been realised through extensive construction and substantial European Union funding, is anticipated to considerably increase the capacity of this crucial transit point. Consequently, it is expected to facilitate much smoother daily commutes for the thousands of residents who regularly navigate Nicosia.
The initiative, which was spearheaded by the European Union and subsequently implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus, involved a comprehensive upgrade of the existing infrastructure. The most notable aspect of this improvement is the addition of a dedicated lane in each direction, effectively doubling the potential vehicular throughput of the crossing. Furthermore, the project importantly incorporated the construction of a new pedestrian walkway, addressing a long-standing requirement for enhanced non-vehicular transit. The final construction phase concluded as recently as February 16th, enabling the immediate activation of the expanded facilities.
Konstantinos Yiangou, the Deputy Mayor of Agios Dometios, expressed his considerable satisfaction with the project's successful completion, emphasizing its potential to significantly alleviate current congestion. "We are delighted by the opening of the third lane and are hopeful that police staffing across all three checkpoints will be adequate for simultaneous operation when necessary," Yiangou commented, highlighting a key factor for the efficient utilisation of the new infrastructure. The police have confirmed that the third checkpoint is now active and will be deployed according to prevailing traffic demands, a flexible strategy designed to optimise resource allocation effectively.
