They capitalised on the ensuing chaos to facilitate the escape of 23 inmates. This coordinated campaign of terror, which included assaults on National Guard installations and significant civil unrest, resulted in the deaths of at least 34 cartel gunmen, 25 National Guard members, and the 23 escapees, bringing total fatalities to over 70 within a few days.
Intelligence that led to the raid reportedly originated from information obtained on Friday, which identified an individual connected to one of "El Mencho's" closest associates. The following Saturday, this woman visited the cartel leader in the municipality of Tapalpa. This provided authorities with a critical opportunity to launch their operation early Sunday morning. The cartel's rapid response, however, clearly demonstrated the extent to which their operational capabilities remain intact despite the potential loss of their central figure.
The repercussions of this surge in violence have been immediate and extensive. Major cities, including Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, experienced temporary shutdowns as businesses closed their doors and residents sought safety. The disruption significantly impacted the vital tourism sector, with airlines suspending flights and cruise liners diverting their planned itineraries away from the popular beach resort of Puerto Vallarta.
