Cyprus has once again demonstrated its growing prowess in regional athletics, achieving a remarkable medal haul and setting new national records at the 30th Balkan Indoor Athletics Championships. The nine-member Cypriot delegation, under the guidance of coach Luis Felipe Meliz, returned from Belgrade having significantly bolstered their nation's reputation for athletic excellence. They proudly secured two gold medals and established two new national benchmarks, firmly etching their achievements into Cypriot sporting history.
This latest success builds upon a clear upward trend for Cypriot athletes competing on the continental level. Filippa Fotopoulou delivered a commanding performance to clinch the women's long jump title, with her opening leap of 6.49 metres proving insurmountable for her competitors. This marked a significant personal milestone, her inaugural Balkan Championships gold medal in an indoor setting. While her national indoor record remains at 6.53 metres, Fotopoulou's consistent series of jumps exceeding 6.42 metres demonstrated a formidable level of sustained performance throughout the competition.
Equally impressive was veteran Milan Trajkovic, who secured his third Balkan indoor title by dominating the men's 60 metres hurdles. His winning time of 7.71 seconds showcased his enduring speed and technical mastery, reaffirming his status as a formidable competitor in this demanding event. Trajkovic’s previous triumphs in Istanbul and Belgrade further underscore his sustained excellence over many years.
Beyond the gold medallists, the Cypriot contingent showcased remarkable depth and emerging talent. Petros Michaelides delivered a career-defining performance in the men's indoor shot put, launching a throw of 19.49 metres to secure a commendable fourth place. This distance not only placed him among the elite but also established a new Cyprus national record, signalling a significant advancement in his discipline. Young talent Antonis Katsantonis also announced his arrival on the senior stage with a fifth-place finish in the men's U20 60 metres, setting a new national record with his time of 6.68 seconds.
The collective success of the Cypriot team was truly outstanding, with the delegation amassing an impressive total of 25 medals, including 11 golds. This overall medal tally speaks volumes about the dedication and calibre of athletes representing Cyprus, as well as the effectiveness of national development programmes. The consistent performance across various disciplines and age categories suggests a robust athletic infrastructure is in place, fostering talent from grassroots to elite levels. This Balkan success serves as potent validation of the steady rise of Cypriot athletics, providing invaluable confidence and momentum for emerging talents as they pursue further international success.
