Cyprus Parliamentarians Meet Former POWs, Reaffirming Solidarity with Ukraine

A delegation of Cypriot parliamentarians convened with former Ukrainian prisoners of war in Nicosia on Tuesday, an encounter designed to highlight the island nation's steadfast support for Ukraine's sovereignty. This meeting, strategically scheduled to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, provided a crucial platform for Ukrainian representatives. They were able to share deeply moving accounts of their experiences in captivity and illuminate the critical conditions endured by civilians in Russian-occupied territories.

The Cypriot delegation included Haris Georgiades, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Averof Neophytou, a Member of Parliament. They engaged in direct discussions with Volodymyr Mykolaienko, the former mayor of Kherson, and Dmytro Khilyuk, a journalist who had been held captive. Their personal testimonies offered a stark, first-hand perspective on the realities of the ongoing conflict. These narratives resonated profoundly with the attending Cypriot lawmakers. Yulia Pavliuk, Head of Ukraine’s regional staff for prisoners of war, also participated, offering vital insights into Ukraine's broader challenges in securing the release and well-being of its captured citizens.

During these discussions, which were facilitated by the Ukrainian Embassy in Cyprus, Cypriot MPs received detailed briefings on the current situation concerning prisoners of war. Pervasive concerns surrounding the welfare of residents in areas under Russian control were also thoroughly addressed. The parliamentarians expressed profound empathy, drawing direct parallels between Ukraine’s plight and Cyprus’s own protracted experience with illegal occupation. They also highlighted the enduring issue of missing persons. Mr. Georgiades articulated this significant connection, stating, "Cyprus has an added moral duty to stand with Ukraine, beyond its commitment to international law, as it remains a country affected by the 'illegal occupation of its territory'."

This significant meeting served as a powerful reaffirmation of Cyprus's commitment to upholding Ukraine's independence and the inviolability of its borders. The Cypriot lawmakers conveyed their strong support for Ukraine in "its heroic struggle against Russian aggression." They emphasized the imperative for a united European front in the face of continuing hostilities. The exchange also highlighted the considerable difficulties Ukraine encounters in obtaining accurate information about captured personnel. This underscored the critical need for sustained international pressure and ongoing diplomatic engagement. The presence of former POWs in Nicosia served not only to strengthen diplomatic ties but also to humanize the conflict for the Cypriot political establishment, reinforcing the moral imperative for continued support.
