Cyprus’s municipalities have collectively committed to implementing significantly more stringent oversight on traditional Easter bonfires, known locally as "lambradjies." This decision by the Union of Municipalities on Friday signals a considerable shift in managing this deeply ingrained custom. The move arises from growing unease regarding the increasingly hazardous nature of bonfire preparations in recent years. While lighting bonfires is a cherished Easter tradition, its contemporary practice has sometimes become associated with behaviour deviating from its moral underpinnings. Concerns have been heightened by the alarming storage of combustible and potentially explosive materials in residential areas, posing a clear threat. Furthermore, the involvement of minors in handling volatile substances has become a significant worry.
Andreas Vyras, Chairman of the Union of Municipalities, highlighted the seriousness of the issue, stating that previous years saw delinquent behaviour unrelated to local morals and customs. Local authorities and law enforcement are now expected to adopt a more proactive and collaborative approach. The imperative for swift, unified action from the police and fire service has been stressed to effectively mitigate the burgeoning risks associated with bonfire culture.
Past tragic events have underscored the urgency of this renewed focus. The fatal accident of a young man last year during bonfire preparations served as a devastating reminder of lax safety protocols. This incident, coupled with reports of explosions and disturbances, has prompted a critical reassessment of existing regulations and their enforcement. Criminologist Eleni Demetriou articulated the prevailing sentiment, asserting that the matter now concerns public safety and legal compliance rather than mere cultural expression.
Enhanced oversight will involve concrete measures to prevent the indiscriminate collection and storage of hazardous materials in populated zones. Municipalities will collaborate closely with police and the fire service to monitor these activities rigorously.
