The European Commission has proudly announced the successful conclusion of significant infrastructure enhancements at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point in Nicosia. Substantial funding for this crucial project was channelled through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), clearly demonstrating the EU's steadfast commitment to promoting practical cooperation and improving the daily lives of all Cypriots.
This ambitious project, a direct result of collaborative efforts between the bi-communal Technical Committee for crossing points and construction firms from both communities, introduces vital upgrades. These enhancements are specifically designed to significantly improve safety and expedite the movement of vehicles. Previously, Ayios Dhometios functioned as the sole vehicular crossing within the capital city. In contrast, the central Nicosia crossings at Ledra Street and Ledra Palace were exclusively designated for pedestrian traffic, with very limited exceptions for UN personnel and diplomatic vehicles. The newly completed works effectively address the long-standing capacity limitations at this essential passage.
Central to the implemented improvements is the addition of a new lane in each direction, effectively doubling the previous capacity. This brings the total number of lanes to three on either side of the crossing, a considerable expansion.
