Law enforcement officials in Limassol have initiated a formal investigation into an alleged attempted murder, following the disturbing discovery of a mother and her seven-year-old son in an unconscious state within their residence. Subsequent medical examinations revealed the presence of sedatives in both individuals' bloodstreams. This crucial evidence has led authorities to suspect the mother of deliberately administering a dangerous quantity of medication to herself and her child.
The alarming incident came to light on Tuesday when the woman and her son were found unresponsive by the husband and father. He promptly transported them to a private medical facility, and it was shortly after their admission that law enforcement was alerted. Although the mother was initially arrested, officers prioritised her immediate medical evaluation due to her critical condition.
Subsequent diagnostic tests conducted at the private hospital provided vital evidence, identifying significant levels of sedatives in the blood samples of both the mother and the young boy. This finding precipitated a significant shift in the nature of the investigation, prompting the Limassol police to escalate their inquiry to one of attempted murder. The mother is now considered the primary suspect in the alleged deliberate overdose.
While the child has since made a full recovery and was discharged from hospital care on Wednesday, the mother's condition necessitated further medical intervention. Following an assessment by a state doctor, she was transferred to Athalassa psychiatric hospital for specialised care.
Limassol police chief Lefteris Kyriakou underscored the sensitive nature of the case, stating, "The police are investigating the case with discretion and sensitivity, in collaboration with the social welfare services." This collaborative approach highlights the multifaceted challenges of the investigation, requiring a thorough criminal inquiry alongside a comprehensive assessment of the child's well-being.
The legal service is now poised to receive the case file, which is being meticulously compiled by the police. This documentation will encompass all gathered evidence, medical reports, and witness statements. The involvement of social welfare services suggests a broader concern for the child's future welfare and the provision of necessary support mechanisms. The incident has understandably caused concern within the community, raising questions about the circumstances that may have led to such a desperate act. The swift recovery of the child offers some solace, but the underlying reasons for the mother's alleged actions remain a critical focus for investigators.
