Limassol, Cyprus is brimming with anticipation for its dynamic 2026 cultural calendar, which promises to invigorate the city. Preparations are well underway for the celebrated Limassol Carnival, expected to showcase renewed energy and time-honoured traditions. Concurrently, the VIMA Art Fair has announced an ambitious curatorial project designed to stimulate thought and cultivate connections among attendees.
The Limassol Municipality, under Mayor Yiannis Armeftis's guidance, is meticulously planning the carnival festivities scheduled for February 12-22. This year's event is intended to be an energetic fusion of established heritage and innovative improvements. Mayor Armeftis emphasised the commitment to enhancing the carnival experience, stating that it will be more dynamic, renewed, and enriched. He indicated that events have been upgraded while preserving authentic and historic elements like satirical floats, pellomaska masks, handmade costumes, and large dances. The traditional spirit, known for its satirical floats, distinctive pellomaska masks, and the melodic chants of the cantadores, will be amplified to maintain the celebration's core essence.
A significant highlight for the upcoming carnival is the selection of Amaryllis Kyriakou as the 2026 Limassol Carnival Queen. This esteemed honour acknowledges Kyriakou's decades of dedicated involvement with the city's most vibrant event. Her participation commenced in 1985 as a companion, and she has actively led her own groups since 2005, becoming an integral part of the carnival's fabric. Her appointment underscores the enduring community spirit fostered by the carnival, extending its celebratory influence across various neighbourhoods. The official programme was unveiled at the Panos Solomonides Municipal Cultural Centre, officially initiating the countdown.
In parallel, the VIMA Art Fair will present its 2026 curatorial project, titled "The Waves Crashing," from May 15-17, with a preview on May 14. This initiative, curated by Greek curator Kostas Stasinopoulos and hosted at The Warehouse by IT Quarter, will explore profound themes of interconnectedness, the passage of time, and introspection. The project draws inspiration from the evocative imagery of waves, symbolising existence's ephemeral nature and the powerful forces shaping our perceptions. A preview revealed the project's conceptual basis: "To begin a wave is to relinquish certainty: you may never hear it crash, never see where or how it breaks."
"The Waves Crashing" will be presented as a comprehensive artistic experience, featuring a group exhibition alongside a live programme including film screenings, performances, and engaging discussions. The aim is to establish an immersive environment, primarily utilizing the venue's outdoor spaces, prompting participants to reflect on contemporary communication methods and societal progress.
