The devastating incidents occurred in the port city of Bandar Abbas and the southwestern hub of Ahvaz. In Bandar Abbas, a crucial Persian Gulf port, an eight-storey residential building suffered extensive damage. Concurrently, in Ahvaz, a city near the Iraqi border, a separate explosion completely destroyed a four-storey residential structure. This catastrophic event tragically resulted in the deaths of four family members, including two young children.
State-affiliated media and local officials have swiftly presented a unified explanation, asserting that the explosions were accidental. They claim that the ignition of accumulated domestic gas was the primary cause. Mohammad Amin Lyaghat, the fire chief in Bandar Abbas, reiterated this point, stating, "The initial cause of the building accident in Bandar Abbas was a gas leak and build-up, leading to an explosion." Despite these official pronouncements, unsubstantiated rumours circulated on social media, suggesting the possibility of a targeted attack. These claims hinted that a commander from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy might have been the intended victim. Iranian authorities have vehemently denied these allegations.
