Cyprus Parties Receive €7 Million in State Funding Ahead of Elections

Political parties in Cyprus have recently received a substantial €7 million in state funding, just weeks before the European Parliament elections in May. This crucial disbursement, which occurred on Friday, has finally removed a long-standing legal obstacle that had previously prevented the distribution of these campaign resources. The resolution was facilitated by a recent opinion from Attorney-General George Savvides, who concluded that pursuing legal action for alleged past misappropriation of funds would be exceedingly difficult and uncertain.

This significant financial injection, calculated according to proportional representation from the 2021 parliamentary elections, offers a vital boost to parties preparing for intensive campaigning. DISY will benefit the most, receiving €1.98 million, followed by AKEL with €1.62 million. DIKO has been allocated €890,000, while ELAM, EDEK, DIPA, and the Ecologist Movement will receive substantial sums as well. Additionally, €314,640 has been designated for the youth wings of these parties, and €100,000 will support initiatives promoting Cyprus' official positions internationally.

The release of these funds brings an end to an eight-year dispute involving approximately €2.6 million in state money. Concerns had been raised about the improper use of funds during the 2018 presidential and 2021 parliamentary elections. Specifically, questions arose regarding €2.09 million from 2018, which had reportedly been used for operational expenses instead of its intended campaign purpose. A subsequent review of €577,511 in misallocated funds from 2021 suggested that these amounts would be better redistributed among parties rather than reclaimed by the state, a recommendation that evidently influenced the Attorney-General's assessment.

The Attorney-General's pivotal opinion, issued approximately a week ago, highlighted the significant legal challenges in recovering the disputed funds from past election cycles. This assessment effectively cleared the path for the unconditional release of the current funding tranche. With the prospect of a successful legal challenge deemed unlikely, Parliament has now approved the disbursement, allowing parties to advance their electoral strategies and communication efforts without further financial constraints. This development will undoubtedly enhance parties' abilities to connect with voters and disseminate their platforms during the crucial upcoming campaign period.
