US Approves $6.67 Billion Arms Sale to Israel Amidst Regional Tensions

The United States Department of State officially announced on Friday the approval of a substantial arms sale to Israel, with an estimated value of approximately $6.67 billion. This significant transaction includes a comprehensive array of advanced military hardware, notably a considerable number of Apache attack helicopters and infantry assault vehicles. Such a move underscores Washington's steadfast commitment to fortifying Israel's defence capabilities. The decision has been made during a particularly sensitive period, with a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, established on October 10, 2025, still in effect. The region is currently contending with the severe aftermath of a protracted conflict that commenced in October 2023.

This approved sale is multifaceted, featuring the acquisition of 30 Apache attack helicopters as its most substantial component, valued at roughly $3.8 billion. Furthermore, Israel is poised to procure infantry assault vehicles, with an estimated cost of $1.98 billion. The overall deal also encompasses a third military contract amounting to $740 million, alongside an allocation of $150 million for light utility helicopters. The US State Department has articulated that these procurements align with its "national interest to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability." This justification highlights the enduring strategic alliance between the two nations and the US's declared dedication to Israel's security.

However, the timing and nature of this arms transfer have unfortunately ignited considerable controversy. Human rights organisations and United Nations experts have expressed profound concerns, asserting that such extensive military provisions, especially attack helicopters with a documented history of use against Palestinian populations, could potentially exacerbate the ongoing conflict and incite further violence. Reports from Gaza health officials indicate a devastating human toll since October 2023, with at least 71,662 fatalities recorded. Moreover, even under the current ceasefire, Israeli forces have reportedly been responsible for the deaths of nearly 500 individuals in the Gaza Strip, presenting a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis and raising critical questions about the implications of supplying advanced weaponry.
