An extensive audit of 4,032 commercial rental contracts uncovered 590 violations. Consequently, 280 agreements were cancelled, with similar non-compliance issues found in municipal and village authority contracts. Municipalities terminated five contracts, while village councils cancelled three. Furthermore, 31 residential property breaches were identified, leading to warning letters and eviction proceedings. The Interior Minister described these measures as a "decisive step" towards rational property management.
Concurrently, a disturbing trend of scams targeting Turkish Cypriots seeking Republic of Cyprus citizenship has emerged. Opportunists are charging exorbitant fees, ranging from €1,000 to €1,600, by falsely promising to expedite applications. A prominent Turkish Cypriot politician has strongly cautioned his community against these deceptive schemes. He stressed that eligible individuals can apply directly through legitimate legal channels without additional costs and that no deadline exists. The heightened interest in citizenship has unfortunately created opportunities for exploitation.
