The Beachside Holiday Park near Mount Maunganui, once a serene retreat, has been transformed into a scene of devastation as authorities transitioned from a desperate search for survivors to a painstaking recovery operation on Saturday. In a separate but equally devastating incident, two people perished in a landslide that struck a private residence in Welcome Bay.
The calamity commenced in the early hours of Thursday morning when an immense deluge of mud and debris cascaped down the slopes, engulfing campervans, caravans, an amenities block, and numerous vehicles at the beachfront campground. Later that same morning, a second, equally destructive slide impacted a house in a neighbouring area. These calamitous events have cast a profound pall of sorrow over New Zealand, particularly poignant as the nation is currently observing its summer school holidays, a period typically dedicated to family recreation and relaxation.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who visited the affected region on Friday, articulated the nation's collective grief. "New Zealand is full of grief today… and grieves with them," he stated, acknowledging the profound sadness that has enveloped the country. The human toll is significant, with initial reports confirming the deaths of two individuals in the residential landslide. "There’s still a lot of mud and other aspects [around the site] so my primary consideration today is actually the safety of the staff working on it," Superintendent Anderson commented on the challenging conditions.
