Man Held After Early-Morning Shooting in Family Dispute

A 49-year-old man will remain in police custody for four days after a shooting incident in the early hours of Saturday in Mesogi, Paphos. The man is accused of firing a hunting rifle outside his sister’s home. Although no one was hurt, the event caused property damage and has led to serious charges, including illegal possession of a firearm and causing terror. This was one of two separate gun incidents on the island within a single day, which has increased concern among police.

According to information given in court, the conflict began with a long-running family argument over property. The situation became worse on Friday night at a local nightclub. There, the man’s brother-in-law told him he could not sit at their table. After this, the suspect sent a disturbing text message to his sister. It said, "Sister, I died today, I don’t exist, don’t look for me again I am dead."

The conflict finally exploded in the quiet village of Mesogi before dawn on Saturday. Police arrived at around 5:30 a.m. after reports of gunshots. They found the suspect shouting outside the house. Officers discovered three empty bullet casings and damage to rooftop antennas from the gunfire. The hunting rifle they believe was used was found placed on a nearby wall. Police also stated that the suspect later called his sister and told her to "Tell him to go downstairs." Investigators think this was an attempt to get his brother-in-law to come outside.

The man now faces multiple serious charges. These include firing a gun in a populated area, illegally having and moving a weapon and explosives, using a firearm to create fear, and damaging property on purpose. The court’s decision to keep him in custody for four days will allow police to complete their investigation.

This violent event, which grew from a personal family problem, has drawn significant attention. It happened just hours before another shooting at an office building in Nicosia. Although the two cases are not connected, their timing has worried both the public and officials. This situation shows the dangerous consequences when personal disputes are not solved through legal means. As the investigation continues, the community is thinking deeply about how to resolve conflicts in a society that is becoming more concerned about gun violence.
