Multi-Agency Sweep Uncovers Significant Irregularities in Limassol Businesses

A comprehensive, coordinated operation targeting businesses owned by foreign nationals in Limassol has revealed numerous immigration and employment violations. Authorities apprehended several individuals and imposed substantial administrative fines during this extensive crackdown. The initiative specifically focused on popular barber shops and restaurants, addressing growing concerns over unregulated business practices and the employment of undocumented workers.

The operation, which took place on Thursday afternoon and evening, involved a collaborative effort between the Limassol Crime Prevention Unit (OPE), immigration officers, Ministry of Labour inspectors, and officials from the Tax Department. Their inspections covered major commercial areas like Anexartisias and Gladstonos streets, aiming to ensure compliance with operating hours, licensing, and employment laws. These checks were particularly focused on smaller enterprises, which have been identified as areas with frequent regulatory non-compliance.

During the intensive scrutiny, which lasted from approximately 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., around 50 individuals were checked at various premises. The results were quite revealing: out of 15 barber shops inspected, a significant number were found to be either closed or operating beyond their permitted hours without the necessary licences. Four barber shops were specifically cited for these breaches. Additionally, one restaurant was discovered to be operating without proper authorisation.

The consequences for these infractions were immediate and serious. Six individuals were arrested by authorities; three were detained for residing illegally in Cyprus, while the other three were apprehended for unauthorised employment. Furthermore, eight workers were identified as not having been formally declared to the relevant authorities, highlighting a substantial problem with undeclared labour.

The financial penalties for the non-compliant businesses were considerable, with a total of €26,800 in administrative fines being issued. These penalties extended beyond immigration and employment issues, as two businesses were also penalised for tax-related discrepancies. These included failures to issue receipts and the absence of electronic payment terminals, pointing towards broader issues of fiscal transparency.

Officials have indicated that this operation is just the beginning, announcing plans for increased inspections in the near future. This demonstrates a strong commitment to enhancing regulatory oversight within the small business sector, especially those managed by foreign nationals and employing foreign workers. The ultimate goal is to cultivate a more compliant business environment, deter illegal immigration and employment, and ensure all businesses operate within legal and fiscal frameworks. The authorities' firm stance signals their dedication to addressing both administrative and criminal breaches that compromise fair competition and legal employment standards in Limassol.
