A substantial upgrade to trade security and anti-smuggling measures has been officially implemented with the handover of a sophisticated Mobile X-Ray Scanning System at the Kyrenia Tourism Port. This generous donation, reflecting the strong partnership between Turkey's Ministries of Trade and Finance, is designed to enhance the operational capacity of the Kyrenia Customs Branch Directorate and elevate national security protocols through technological innovation. The system has been developed over approximately three years of dedicated collaboration between the respective ministries.
The official delivery ceremony was attended by numerous high-ranking officials from both the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), underscoring the strategic significance of this important initiative. Among the distinguished guests were the Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Başçeri, and several TRNC ministers, including those responsible for Finance, Interior, and Economy and Energy. Bureaucrats from both Turkish ministries were also present, highlighting the collaborative spirit behind this project.
This cutting-edge scanning system is expected to revolutionise customs operations by significantly fortifying trade security and improving the detection of illicit activities, such as smuggling. By equipping the Customs and Revenue Department with advanced technology, the goal is to enhance their efficiency and ensure that legitimate trade proceeds smoothly while illegal goods are promptly identified. The system's advanced imaging capabilities will allow for the detection of all kinds of prohibited materials and smuggling attempts that might otherwise be missed.
TRNC Minister of Finance, Özdemir Berova, articulated the broader vision, stating that this acquisition represents a commitment to adapting to a digitalising world and strengthening national security with modern technology. He emphasised the system's high sensitivity in detecting contraband and undeclared items, thereby mitigating risks to national security and economic integrity. The integration of this technology is a crucial step towards embracing a digitalised global landscape and will undoubtedly elevate the nation's security framework.
