Cyprus is initiating a comprehensive programme to modernise its National Guard, significantly boosting national security and its deterrent capabilities. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas emphasised the continuous dedication to strengthening the island's armed forces. This strategic imperative is driven by evolving regional dynamics and the crucial need to protect vital maritime interests. These initiatives involve a multifaceted strategy incorporating intergovernmental agreements, European Union funding, and the strategic acquisition of advanced defence capabilities.
A primary focus of this ambitious undertaking involves securing enhanced armaments and improving operational readiness through carefully planned collaborations. Cyprus is actively exploring opportunities to acquire surplus defence equipment from the United States. This process is facilitated by established agreements such as the Foreign Military Sales and Excess Defense Articles programmes. Concurrently, the nation is capitalising on its participation in the European Union's Safe programme, a significant €1.2 billion initiative aimed at enhancing member states' defence capabilities. This EU funding is proving instrumental in addressing operational requirements and supporting collaborative European procurement efforts, thereby ensuring greater supply security and reducing dependence on single external sources.
Substantial infrastructural upgrades are also a central component of this modernisation drive. Key strategic locations, including the busy Limassol port and the vital Mari Naval Base, are scheduled for significant enhancements.
