Gunfire Erupts as Cyprus Police Dismantle Alleged Protection Racket

A violent confrontation, marked by the distinct sound of gunfire, erupted in the heart of Larnaca on Saturday afternoon, surprisingly close to the city’s police headquarters. This dramatic incident, which led to the apprehension of four individuals, has exposed what authorities believe to be a sophisticated organised crime syndicate. This group allegedly extorted local businesses through a pervasive protection racket. Investigators are now diligently reconstructing the events, which seem to have been initiated by a business owner’s refusal to comply with illicit demands.

The primary reason for this shocking public disturbance is believed to be the car rental entrepreneur’s outright defiance of the syndicate’s insistence on unlawful "protection" payments. Evidence suggests the syndicate, reportedly led by a 48-year-old Cypriot man with a substantial criminal history, had been systematically targeting various businesses across Larnaca for several weeks. The pressure intensified significantly on January 13th when the car rental owner received a second threatening phone call. The caller’s broken Greek conveyed a clear warning: "You will find out who I am." Further inquiries about the expected payment, "When will you bring me the money?" followed.

Witnesses described the ensuing melee on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue as a scene of utter chaos. Reports indicate that participants were armed with a variety of crude weapons, including axes, clubs, and iron bars. At least two gunshots were discharged during the brawl, causing considerable alarm in the usually peaceful city. The syndicate’s alleged method involved forcing business owners, including those in the nightclub industry, into disadvantageous security agreements. Establishments were reportedly pressured to hire guards supplied by the syndicate, who would then charge a substantial "protection" fee. A disproportionately small portion of this fee was apparently passed on to the actual security personnel.

The 48-year-old suspect, who was reportedly injured and received brief medical attention at Larnaca General Hospital, has been remanded in custody for eight days. He faces serious charges, including those connected to the recent extortion-related assault. He is alleged to have continued orchestrating the group's criminal activities despite his prior convictions and recent release on bail. Three foreign nationals, identified as being of Arab descent and aged between 20 and 35, were also arrested in connection with the disturbance. Two other individuals, aged 28 and 29, have been detained for four days, while a 27-year-old suspect has been released pending further investigation.

The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated a thorough investigation, meticulously analysing available video footage and gathering witness statements. In a significant development during a subsequent raid on an apartment believed to be a fugitive’s hideout, investigators discovered eight rounds of 9mm military-grade ammunition. This discovery underscores the potentially lethal nature of the syndicate's operations. Police have also recovered a vehicle and two spent shell casings from the scene of the brawl, which are considered crucial evidence. The extensive nature of this investigation highlights serious concerns regarding the reach of organised crime in the region, and authorities are determined to dismantle the network and restore confidence to the business community.
