Cyprus Dams Low Despite Recent Rain

Recent rain has helped Cyprus's water levels a little. Some smaller dams are now full. However, the Water Development Department says the big dams are still very empty. This shows a big water problem that is worse than last year.

Videos on social media showed water going over the top of Kafizides and Saitas dams. These dams fill up fast when it rains. People saw these videos and felt a little hopeful. They thought the long dry period might be ending.

But, experts say these full small dams are not a big help. The most recent information shows that all the big dams together only have 31.277 million cubic meters of water. This is only 10.8% of their total space. This shows the water shortage is serious.

The water in the dams now is less than at the same time last year. Last year, the dams had more water. This year, the situation is more urgent. Future rain needs to be very heavy for a long time to make a real difference.

There are many reasons for this water problem. Less rain is one reason. People are using more water too. Climate change might also be changing the weather. The recent rain was not enough to fill the big dams. These big dams are very important for farms and homes.

This water shortage affects farming. People must also save water at home. Cyprus needs to manage water well. Building more desalination plants and saving water will be important for the future.
