Marathon Causes Big Traffic Problems in Nicosia

Nicosia, Cyprus – On Sunday, January 18th, there were big traffic problems in the capital city. This was because of the yearly Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon. Many roads were closed for a long time. This made it hard for people to travel.

The city government worked with the police. They made a plan for temporary road changes. Some roads were closed for up to seven hours. This affected many streets, including important ones. These streets are usually very busy. However, they were used for the runners' safety.

The main reason for closing the roads was to keep the runners safe. Organisers wanted to give them clear paths. This helped everyone move easily and avoid accidents. Roads were closed at different times. Some central streets were closed for most of the day. Other main roads opened earlier. This was to help people less.

Many people were affected by the road closures. Drivers were told to find other ways to travel. They also needed to plan their trips carefully. Large events in a city always cause some problems. However, the marathon happened successfully. This showed good teamwork between organisers and the police.
