Former President George Vassiliou Dies at 94

Cyprus is in mourning after the death of former President George Vassiliou. He passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 94. Vassiliou was a very important person in Cyprus since the country became independent. He had been in the hospital for serious medical care. He went to Nicosia General Hospital on January 6th. This was because of a bad chest infection. His family announced that he died peacefully. He had been ill for two years.

George Vassiliou was born in Famagusta in 1931. He worked in education and business before becoming president. He studied in several European cities. He also worked for a paper company in the UK. Then, he came back to Cyprus to serve the country.

He became president in 1988. He was an independent candidate. A political party called AKEL supported him. His time as president lasted from 1988 to 1993. He focused on improving the economy and society. He also worked to modernize Cyprus. A big step was applying to join the European Union. This decision greatly affected the country's future. He also helped start a political movement called the Movement of Free Democrats.

Vassiliou is remembered for starting the University of Cyprus. This showed he cared about education. He also wanted to reunify Cyprus. He worked hard for peace on the island. People respected him internationally. They saw him as a global citizen.

The current President, Nikos Christodoulides, expressed his sadness. He said Vassiliou's name is connected to Cyprus's economic growth. He also mentioned his work for social progress. Christodoulides said, "His name was synonymous with economic development."

His wife, Androulla Vassiliou, also shared her feelings. She said, "My beloved George passed away peacefully." She described him as a kind husband and father. He loved his country and its people. He is survived by his children and grandchildren.

A state funeral will be held on Saturday. It will be at the Ayia Sofia cathedral. He will receive full presidential honours. His body will be available for the public to see on Friday. Books of condolence will be open at the Presidential Palace and embassies. The family asks for donations to charities instead of flowers. Saturday will be a public holiday. Flags will be flown at half-mast. George Vassiliou leaves a lasting legacy.
