A disabled mother in Cyprus waited a very long time for her pension. This problem lasted for almost ten years. It shows big problems in the social insurance system. The Commissioner for Administration criticized the long delay.
The woman first asked for a pension in 2016. She had bad back problems and could not work. Doctors said she was permanently disabled in 2017. However, her first request was denied. This may have happened because of a mistake. A doctor wrote a report in German, and it was not understood well.
The court agreed in 2020 that the rejection was wrong. They said the case needed to be looked at again. The authorities did not fix the problem quickly. They first appealed the court's decision. Then, three years later, they stopped the appeal. They also did not send the woman to a medical council. This council is needed to check if she can work.
The problems continued for many years. In 2024, another medical group could not decide if she was able to work. They said there was not enough information. This shows that the checks were not good. The Cyprus Confederation of Disabled Persons supports the mother. They say this is a problem for all disabled people.
The Commissioner for Administration gave a strong report. She said the delays took away the mother's right to a good life. The Ministry of Labour must now finish reviewing the case in one month. This is a very long time to wait for help. The system needs to be faster and fairer.
