Former President George Vassiliou Dies at 92

Cyprus is in mourning after the death of former President George Vassiliou. He passed away in hospital at the age of 92. Mr. Vassiliou was being treated for a chest infection. He led Cyprus for five years, from 1988 to 1993. Many people remember him for helping Cyprus grow economically and politically. He also played a key role in Cyprus joining the European Union.

Mr. Vassiliou was born in Famagusta in 1931. He studied in Hungary. After returning to Cyprus, he began his career in public service. He was elected as an independent candidate. The Akel party supported him. During his presidency, he worked to update Cyprus and boost its economy. He started many reforms that are still important today.

After his presidency, Mr. Vassiliou remained active. He was the Chief Negotiator for Cyprus's EU membership. This important job ended with Cyprus joining the EU in 2004. He also served in the House of Representatives from 1996 to 2001. This showed his commitment to his country.

Mr. Vassiliou was also an entrepreneur. He started a research centre and a political party. He also helped establish the University of Cyprus. This university is very important for education. He always wanted a solution for the Cyprus problem.

His death has caused sadness across the country. The current President, Nikos Christodoulides, said Mr. Vassiliou was a symbol of progress. His wife, Androulla Vassiliou, said goodbye to her husband of 59 years. Political parties have sent their condolences. George Vassiliou's leadership helped Cyprus greatly.
