Cyprus Sees Rise in Winter Viruses

Makarios Hospital in Cyprus is seeing more children with winter sickness. This is usual for this time of year. Doctors are watching the situation closely. Hospital beds are not full yet. They expect more sick children soon.

January to March is usually the busiest time for coughs and colds. This year is like other years. Makarios Hospital has treated children with flu. One child was in hospital with a breathing virus called RSV. Other children are getting better from flu. Some children had flu and other health problems. The hospital's special care for breathing problems is not full. This is good news for the health system. No children have been admitted for COVID-19 recently. This is different from past winters.

Dr. Elena Papamichael is the head of the children's clinic. She said the hospital is as busy as last year. However, she thinks more cases will come. Health officials have plans for more flu cases. They will make sure doctors and nurses are ready. They will also have plans to move patients if needed.

Doctors are now more worried about flu. They are less worried about COVID-19. They want people to get the flu vaccine. This is important for people who get sick easily. It is also important to stay home when you are sick. This stops viruses from spreading. People should not be too close to others. Keep windows open for fresh air. Wash your hands often. Avoid crowded places too.

Makarios Hospital is managing well now. But they know more children will get sick. Doctors and people working together will help. Following advice will keep children safe.
