Syrian Forces Take Final Kurdish Area in Aleppo

Syrian government forces said they now control the last Kurdish area in Aleppo city. However, Kurdish fighters disagreed. They said their fight would continue. A ceasefire agreement was then made. This agreement helped Kurdish fighters and many civilians leave the Sheikh Maksoud area.

Fighting started again earlier in the week. It broke a previous, weak peace. The Syrian army announced on Saturday that fighting was finished. They checked the Sheikh Maksoud neighbourhood for safety. The Governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, confirmed that the last Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) left the city. Fighters and civilians took buses to northern and eastern Syria. These areas are controlled by Kurds.

Fighting began because Kurdish forces were not included in the new Syrian government. This was planned after the leader, Bashar al-Assad, left in December 2024. Talks about SDF joining the army failed. This led to the fighting. Many civilians were hurt. Over 140,000 people had to leave their homes.

The world, including the United States, wanted a ceasefire. The agreement was made with help from other countries. It allowed people to leave safely. An SDF commander said the agreement would help evacuate people. He asked mediators to keep the peace. He also wants displaced people to return home safely.

The Syrian army taking Sheikh Maksoud means the last Kurdish area in Aleppo is gone. This is a big win for the government. However, Kurdish forces still control large parts of northeastern Syria. These areas have their own government. Aleppo city is now quieter. But many people lost their homes. The future for people in Syria is still unclear.
