Cyprus drivers must renew their road tax by March 11th. However, many drivers cannot renew their tax. This is because of problems with car airbags. About 11,000 cars cannot renew their tax. These cars need new Takata airbags.
Drivers can pay their road tax in parts. They need a valid roadworthiness certificate. They also need active insurance. The main problem is that these cars did not get the new airbags. The Road Transport Department (RTD) will not let these cars renew their tax.
This is for safety. All cars on Cyprus roads must be safe. The RTD has told owners about the airbag recalls. Many cars had this problem. About 100,500 cars needed new airbags. Most owners did this. But some cars still need the new airbags.
A special time for recall notifications has ended. If owners did not change the airbags, their car cannot renew tax. These cars cannot be driven on roads. An RTD officer said there will be no extension for the deadline.
Drivers who miss the deadline will pay extra money. They will pay a €10 charge. They will also pay 10% more of the tax. The RTD wants drivers to renew on time. The renewal is finished when you see the "Print Registration Licence" screen.
Some cars were not renewed in 2025. These cars might be removed from the register. Owners must pay all fees. They must get the 2026 licence. If you do not want to renew, tell the RTD online. This avoids extra fees. The RTD expects many renewals. Drivers should not wait until the last day.
